The contact page's nebulae: Hubble imagery (ESA/Hubble, Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International) The live sky of the contact page (/kontakt/, src/experience/contact: sky.ts, gl/veil.ts) draws the far nebulae round the galactic cube and the glow of gas inside it from one atlas in this folder, made from three Hubble Space Telescope images published by ESA/Hubble. The page's stills (renders of the live sky at rest, scripts/contact/stills.mjs) show them as the live sky does: the cube's files (cube-*.webp) the glow of gas inside the cube (all three images), the desktop's sky (stars-landscape-*.webp) the Carina piece beside the cube; the phones' sky files (stars-short-*.webp, stars-portrait-*.webp) none. Everything else in the sky is drawn by the page itself (the stars, the galaxies, the cube; the home page's own baked galaxy, public/space/v2). Files made from the images: nebula-2048.webp 2048 x 2048, the atlas (desktops, tablets and phones with fine screens) nebula-1024.webp 1024 x 1024, the same atlas at half the size (the lightest live sky on a coarse screen) Licence: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0), https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ , as ESA/Hubble releases its images and videos (https://esahubble.org/copyright/). "Star birth in the extreme" (heic0707a, the Carina Nebula) Credit: NASA, ESA, N. "Hubble's 28th birthday picture: The Lagoon Nebula" (heic1808a) Credit: NASA, ESA, STScI Page: https://esahubble.org/images/heic1808a/ File: https://cdn.esahubble.org/archives/images/publicationjpg/heic1808a.jpg (3173 x 4000, downloaded 2026-10-05) Used: the atlas' piece "rose" (the source's full width, rows 260 to 1846) Changes made to the images (scripts/contact/nebula.py, run on the files above; the result is the atlas): - stars removed: every round point of light well over the light round it (found at four sizes), masked as far as its halo reaches, and the saturated stars with their diffraction spikes, each filled from the gas round it (the known light pulled in from all sides, never from the star itself), twice; the gas between the stars is left as it is, so the filaments keep their detail (the page draws its own stars); - cropped to the pieces above, resized (area averaging) into the atlas and sharpened slightly (an unsharp mask of radius 1 px at 0.4); - graded (in linear light): each piece's darkest 2 % (per colour channel) set to black; for "gold", "rose" and "wisp" the fainter gas below a share of the piece's light (42 %, 30 % and 3 %) faded smoothly to black, so each cloud keeps its own shape on the black; the colours set (saturation 1.0 for "veil", 1.25 to 1.38 for the others) and the greens leant towards teal; a gain of 1.05 to 2.0 ("veil" 1.05, "rose" 1.2, "gold" 1.25, "wisp" 2.0); - each piece faded to black over the outer 14 % of its width and height; - any round blob of light still standing alone at the atlas' own scale (a star's halo) taken out the same way; - encoded as WebP (quality 86; the half-size file resized from the full one and cleaned again at its own scale). On the page the pieces are drawn dimmed (from under a tenth to half of their light), turned, drifting slowly.
